Perimenopause Stress and Why you feel it more...

Here’s something you might not have been told:
The first hormone to decline in perimenopause isn’t estrogen - it’s progesterone. And often, it doesn’t fall just because of age… it also falls because of chronic stress.
Your body has a built-in hormone hierarchy. And cortisol - your survival hormone - sits at the top.
When your system feels threatened (even by blood sugar swings, inflammation, or poor sleep), it pulls from your progesterone reserves to keep producing cortisol.
This is called pregnenolone steal, and it’s one of the physiological shifts in perimenopause.
And then you pile on the already decreasing progesterone that occurs during perimenpause - it makes a perfect storm of why so many women feel burnt out, stressed, and just can't handle things like they used to in the past.
What happens next?
Sleep becomes fragmented, especially between 2–4 a.m.
You feel reactive, overwhelmed, or wired but exhausted
Cycles get heavier, shorter, or more erratic
HRT, supplements, and clean eating don’t seem to be working
This isn’t just aging. It’s your body responding to a survival signal - and this month inside Vitality, we’re addressing that signal head-on.
